Winter survival kit

Those who live in regions which have cold, snowy winters know that dangerous winter storms can develop quickly. Becoming stranded in a severe winter storm or blizzard can be a very dangerous situation. Review our winter driving tips and learn what to do if you become stranded in a severe winter storm. Carry the following items in your car to help survive:


Keep in passenger compartment:

  • Flashlight
  • First-aid kit
  • Blanket (special 'survival' blankets are best)
  • Ice scraper and brush
  • Road maps
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Cell phone or CB (if possible)
  • Games for children

Keep in Trunk:

  • Booster cables
  • Small shovel
  • Sand or cat litter
  • Tow rope or chain
  • Warm clothing and footwear
  • Cloth or roll of paper towels
  • Road flares, or warning light
  • Container of fuel antifreeze
  • Emergency food & drink (high energy snacks and juice)
  • Basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench, etc.)
  • Extra windshield washer fluid
  • Extra gallon of engine coolant
  • Matches and a 'survival' candle (to warm hands, heat a drink or use as an emergency light)
  • Compass
    Fuel: It's a good idea to keep your fuel tank full in the event you get stranded and need to run your vehicle occasionally to keep warm
